Company of Heroes Review: Introduction

History books

The period 1939-1945 is imprinted forever into the minds of these, who lived at the time and in the history books. Germany proclaims itself Master of the world and starts its march in Europe with annexation of Austria and occupation of Poland. Great Britain and France finally decide to declare war on Germany but nothing is done for some time. Quickly follows the capitulation of Denmark and Norway. Then comes the big shock – France is taken very easy by the German army and soon all of Europe is under the Nazis military boot. Only Great Britain remains free but under heavy threat from German occupation.

In this treacherous times the future looks bleak and brown. Then Hitler and its allies become overconfident and attack the two powers that have not been involved in the war yet: USA and Soviet Union. Even with these world powers against it, it takes few years before the war is reversed and allies begin planning their return to the continental Europe. Russian troops are marching through Europe and western allies finally decide to act before the german occupation over Europe is replaced by the equally oppressive soviet one. Their success is only partial: despite the thousands killed and wounded, almost a third of Europe remains under soviet oppression for half a century.

Now with Company of Heroes the end of these historical events can be different.

Company of Heroes is real-time strategy that redefines the graphics quality of the genre. Unlike the most 3D RTS games, here the camera is completely free – you can place it everywhere and it can look in every direction.

It is good idea to take the game tutorial before diving in the World War II wold. In the tutorial you go through few levels of war training, starting from the production of units all the way up to the Armor Training, which covers tactical tank usage.

There are few modes of game, from which the players can choose: Campaign, Skirmish and Multiplayer. Their names are fairly self-explanatory as these are the common game modes in every RTS.
