Crysis Review: Sandbox editor and Multiplayer

The Sandbox editor included in Crysis is similar to the one in FarCry. With both of them can be made maps and modifications for the CryENGINE 3D technology. In the new version called Sandbox2 Editor there is an important new option: you can make your own levels for both single- and multiplayer. The editor allows flexible work regime and the user can test his work at any time. Crytek used the same editor when they developed Crysis. Actually the Sandbox editor is a quite sophisticated and flexible 3D modeling program. Every object can be cloned, replaced, and removed. The variety of objects to use is large. Vegetation, clouds, diverse terrains, rocks, people and music are a little part of them. The various types of brushes contribute to the more natural look of the objects. With character editor (introduced in Sandbox2 Editor), you can make folks, aliens and animals. Along with visual changes you can create animations. Here are examples of character animation:

After about 30 min work with the program it was obvious that it needs more then the 2 GB virtual memory available to 32-bit Windows. For that reason using a 64-bit Windows is requirement for any serious work (this is the recommendation of Crytec too). Despite this limitation, the editor is wonderful addition to the game, and with it you can change every property of with absolute all objects in Crysis.

As a whole the singleplayer game script is a good. There are twists and unexpected situations. Also there are interesting and varied characters and fresh lines too. The multiplayer's plot unlike the singleplayer is "written" completely by the players. Besides local network game, they can choose between internet game and quick game (you will be added to a random server with good ping). There are two different multiplayer modes: Instant Action and Power Struggle. The first one is deathmatch type mode. When the player is killed, in a few seconds he or she reappears in the game. The second one offers a game between two opposing teams. In the multiplayer, the vehicles can not be driven at the moment of finding. In order to use them, the players have to capture the area that specializes in manufacturing of this vehicle. The game has various maps with different terrains and buildings. At the end of the last year Cryrek released multiplayer map pack with several additional maps for both modes. The maximum number of players is 32. In addition, there is toggle mode and each player can examine the map while waiting for the rest to show up. Also there are options for enable/disable friendly fire and voice communication.
